Emmy wyjątkowo w tym roku rozdane zostaną pod koniec sierpnia, a nie we wrześniu. Taką decyzję podjęła stacja NBC, która będzie transmitować galę. Odbędzie się ona 25 sierpnia 2014 roku, czyli w nocy z poniedziałku na wtorek czasu polskiego. Nominacje ogłoszone zostały w Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre. Wyczytali je: aktorka Mindy Kaling i prowadzący program "The Voice" Carson Daly. Finałową galę transmitowaną na NBC poprowadzi Seth Meyers.
Najwięcej nominacji (razem z kategoriami technicznymi) wśród seriali dramatycznych otrzymały: Gra o tron, Fargo, American Horror Story: Coven oraz Breaking Bad. Z kolei najwięcej wyróżnień wśród produkcji komediowych przyznano serialom: Orange Is The New Black, Modern Family i Veep.
Wśród stacji telewizyjnych dominuje HBO (19 nominacji), a tuż za nią znalazła się platforma internetowa Netflix oraz Showtime (po 13 nominacji).
