Uczniowie szkoły średniej na Upper East Side na Manhattanie, dowiadują się za sprawą dobrze znanego, ale tajemniczego internetowego bloga „Gossip Girl” że Serena van der Woodsen wróciła do miasta. Nikt nie zna prawdziwej tożsamości tytułowej Plotkary, ale wszyscy z tego elitarnego i skomplikowanego otoczenia interesują się najnowszymi plotkami.
Nawet najbliższa przyjaciółka Sereny – Blair Waldorf jest zaskoczona, że jej przyjaciółka nagle wróciła ze szkoły z internatem w Nowej Anglii. Powód powrotu tej niegdyś wielkiej imprezowiczki pozostaje tajemnicą, ale może być związany z osobą jej młodszego brata – Erica, który jest zamknięty w szpitalu po nieudanej próbie samobójczej, a ukrywany przed opinią publiczną przez ich matkę – Lily.
Zmiana jaka zaszła w Serenie jest oczywista, szczególnie dla Blair, której przyjaźń z Sereną oznaczała zawsze rywalizację. Wśród tej elity pojawia się Dan Humphrey, chłopak z Brooklyn’u, którego młodsza siostra Jenny, za bardzo się stara dopasować do otoczenia Blair.
