After the death of her mother, Inés Suárez lives in Plasencia together with her sister Asuncion and her authoritarian grandfather. There she meets Juan de Malaga, a merchant with whom she falls in love and with whom she marries after escaping from the family home and traveling to Seville, a lively and prosperous city, gateway to the 'New World'.
