Babilon 5 to znajdująca się w neutralnej przestrzeni stacja kosmiczna zbudowana ok. 2250 roku przez Sojusz Ziemski. Celem jej istnienia jest utrzymanie pokoju między różnymi rasami poprzez udostępnienie bezpiecznego miejsca do prowadzenia rozmów i rozwiązywania sporów. Oprócz funkcji dyplomatycznej, stacja pełni rolę zarówno posterunku wojskowego, jak i przystanku dla podróżnych, kupców czy przestępców. Akcja serialu toczy się przede wszystkim wokół polityki, jednak pojawiają się również wątki miłosne, kulturowe i religijne.
