Podczas przyjęcia dla dzieci z okazji Halloween jedna z obecnych dziewczynek, Joyce Reynolds (Macy Nyman), stwierdza, że kilka lat wcześniej była świadkiem morderstwa. Ponieważ jest znana z fantazjowania, nikt nie daje wiary jej słowom. Jednak jeszcze tego wieczoru ta sam dziewczynka zostaje znaleziona martwa. Na prośbę Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker) dochodzenie w zagadkowej sprawie podejmuje słynny detektyw, Herkules Poirot (David Suchet).
